Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth took place on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by her aunt Denise as a young kid. She was a night nurse to allow her mother the time she needed throughout her day time to enjoy the pleasures of literature, art, and theatre. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's model of that art can be an instrument for activism. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and earned diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was a student at the college at the time she began to become fascinated by the production aspect of the broadcast media. DuVernay began her career as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to watch and search the home of a particular juror. Her disappointment was evident in her journalistic duties and decided to switch over to the field of public relations. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist at small production studios right after she graduated from school. From this position she started her own company for public relations named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency launched a number of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
